HOMEPAGE

All students learn hand sewing skills needed to make various craft projects.  Students also learn the parts of the sewing machine and prove their sewing skills by completing road tests and getting their Sewing Machine Operator's License.  Many wonderful projects are created in Family Science class.  Sixth graders make a reversible apron and a babysitting bag.  Seventh graders make a stuffed whale, a potholder, a gift bag, a large tote bag, and everyone's favorite - a bean bag frog.  Eighth graders make a quilt square that will become part of  the team quilts that are made and given to a lucky student on each team at the end of the year.  What a great memento of their years at PCS.

All grade levels also have a unit on babysitting and child care which includes a day of caring for young children at the nursery school held in the Family Science room at PCS.  Students can bring in younger siblings for a day of fun and learning for all.  Eighth graders also have a unit on teen pregnancy and childbirth which includes the opportunity to take home a computerized baby for the weekend.

Foods and nutrition is also a part of the curriculum for all grade levels.  Sixth grade favorites are English muffin pizzas, grilled cheese sandwiches, Quesadillas, French toast, snickerdoodles, and Orange Julius.  Seventh graders advance to making muffins, chocolate chip cookies, apple crisp, danish, pizza (from scratch), and trail mix.  Eighth graders enjoy cooking for the rest of the class by putting on a restaurant and taking orders and preparing lunch or breakfast for their classmates.  They must make a sign and menu and do a commercial in front of the class to advertise their place of business.  Cooking has always been the favorite activity in Family Science class.
