GAP

What is GAP?

GAP stands for Guidance Assistance Program.  Our purpose is to give individual children a sense of belonging, cultivate their strengths, and equip them with the skills needed to solve problems and build friendships.  In a fun setting, guided by a trained adult, students develop rules and routines, become aware of their feelings, and develop ways to get along with others and feel good about themselves.  The children practice skills they can use in the classroom, on the playground, and in their lives outside of school.

Who is eligible for GAP?

A limited number of students participate in GAP.  Children are selected through a screening process, which identifies a child's mood, learning ability, and attitude in the classroom.  Teacher recommendations and parent requests are also considered.  If you think your child might benefit from this program, talk to his or her teacher about the possibility.

Where do student meet?

A special classroom or space has been set aside.  It is typically stocked with expressive toys, art supplies, cooperative games and materials that allow exploration of gifts and talents.

How often do students go to GAP?

Students generally visit the GAP resource room individually for 30-40 minutes per week.  GAP instructors may also work with students within classrooms.

How will a child expect to benefit from GAP?

What is the role of a GAP parent?

Our door is always open to parents.  We rely on their knowledge and presence as we work together with children and teachers to shape a plan that uniquely fits each child.

Parents are full partners in developing their child's GAP program.  We will contact them weekly through phone calls, notes home and personal contact at school.  We look forward to working with parents to identify their children's strengths and needs.

Anything else?

The GAP program of Plainfield is linked to community services like the local library, the Family Resource Center, and United Services.  GAP and Aldrich Library collaborate to carry out science, literacy and puppetry programs.
