Dear Parents and Guardians:
On behalf of myself and the entire faculty at Plainfield Memorial School, I would like to welcome you to the start of the school year and take a moment to introduce myself. I hope to see many familiar faces as I have served at both Moosup Elementary School as well as Shepard Hill Elementary School and I look forward to reconnecting those partnerships. I am life-long resident of Plainfield. My husband Daniel and I raised our two children in this community and I am loyal to Plainfield and the wonderful initiatives our schools have in place. I look forward to working collaboratively with each family. I am committed to creating a partnership with you to ensure the success of your child. I value communication with families and encourage you to contact me with any questions or needs you may encounter.
It won’t be long until school begins and our building will be filled with new educational endeavors. We are looking forward to a rewarding year for you and your child. Our school will hold a Meet and Greet on Tuesday, August 25th from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Families and students are invited to tour the building, meet with teachers and learn more about PMS.
In response to the family survey, we have developed a goal around communication with families and are committed to building a strong working partnership with school, family and our community. Specifically, we would like to give you more information about our curriculum, what quality work looks like and how to help children with homework. Our staff is dedicated to fostering a trusting relationship, keeping you informed on a regular basis and working to ensure a high degree of success for your child.
We encourage you to become actively involved in our school family, as your schedule allows, by becoming a parent volunteer in a classroom, working in the library, or a myriad of other opportunities. I invite you to visit our school and classrooms. You can become a part of our very active PTO, PACT (Parent Advocacy Collaboration Team) which meets the first Monday of the month at 5:30 at the ECC building, and/or our parent volunteer program. We invite you to share your talents with students and teachers and/or volunteer during the day or evening. We value your input and look forward to working together in any way that is possible. Please take the time to fill out a parent volunteer form, which will be available on our website and also in the main office.
Our rigorous curriculum is filled with many opportunities for learning. Our staff collaborates to meet the Connecticut Core State Standards and places a strong emphasis on reading, writing and mathematics. Our goal is for each child to achieve continuous academic growth and the staff is looking forward to a year of academic, social and emotional growth for your child. We are committed to doing whatever it takes for each and every child to be the best he/she can be.
One of our priorities is to stress the importance or reading. We hope to work together to develop and promote a love of reading. Research shows that children who read a minimum of 20 minutes a night are more successful readers than those who don’t. Building 20 minutes into each day for reading together also provides important bonding time. There is nothing more wonderful than sharing a book. Spending 20 minutes reading provides you with quiet, uninterrupted time together engaged in the same activity.
Another priority is stressing the importance of regular attendance. We ask that you encourage your child to come to school every day on time. Research shows that regular attendance is the single most important factor in school success. Please remind your child to do his/her best in everything and to show respect to everyone. At PMS, we promote “Cougar P.R.I.D.E.” and students are acknowledged for showing Perseverance, Respect, Independence, Dependability and Excellence. Through the use of Cougar Paws, we recognize students who follow our school-wide expectations.
Frequent communication between home and school will help your child be even more successful. All students will be given an agenda to record homework assignments in. It includes our student handbook for you and your child to review. The agenda is a great way to communicate with your child’s teacher. You will also receive a newsletter, Partners in Education, regarding important information about our school. Our website address is www.plainfieldschools.org.
It is with extreme pleasure and pride that I welcome you to a new school year. Our goal is to provide all children with a productive and successful intermediate school experience. I value your input and suggestions and am available to meet and talk with you at any time. By working together, I am certain that we can create a community where students can reach high levels of growth. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact me so that we can work together for your child and our school.
Your Partner in Education,
