Important Notifications for Parents and Families

2026-2027


Plainfield Public Schools is required to provide families with easy access to important district policies, student rights notifications, and safety procedures. We have compiled these mandated documents into a single, organized location to assist you in quickly finding the information you need.

To help you navigate these regulations, we have categorized the policies into four key areas:

 

  • Conduct, Discipline, and Safety: Rules governing student behavior, attendance expectations, technology use, and search and seizure protocols.

  • Student and Civil Rights: Federal and state protections regarding educational records, anti-discrimination, special education services, and privacy rights.

  • Health, Wellness, and Nutrition: Statutory requirements for medication administration, immunizations, allergy management, suicide prevention, and school meal programs.

  • Operations and Environment: District procedures concerning transportation safety, environmental notifications, and our legal duties regarding child welfare.

  1. Conduct, Discipline, and Safety

    • Code of Conduct & Discipline: Detailed rules regarding student behavior, the definitions of various infractions, and the due process procedures for suspension and expulsion (C.G.S. § 10-233e).

    • Safe School Climate & Bullying: The district's Safe School Climate Plan, definitions of bullying and cyberbullying, and procedures for reporting and investigating incidents, including teen dating violence (C.G.S. § 10-222d).

    • Attendance & Truancy: Clear definitions of excused versus unexcused absences, make-up work procedures, and the statutory grounds and interventions for truancy (C.G.S. § 10-198a).

    • Acceptable Use of Technology: Rules for using district computers, networks, and the internet, including policies on digital citizenship, artificial intelligence, and student data privacy.   

    • Search and Seizure: Policies detailing the legal thresholds for when school officials can search students, lockers, and personal property.

       

  2. Student and Civil Rights

    • FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act): A federal notification outlining parents' and students' rights to inspect, review, and amend educational records, along with the district's definition of public "directory information."

    • Non-Discrimination & Title IX: Explicit statements prohibiting discrimination and sexual harassment based on protected classes, along with contact information for the district's Title IX coordinator and instructions on how to file a complaint.

    • Special Education & Section 504: Information regarding the district's responsibility to identify students who may need services (Child Find), procedural safeguards, and the rights of students with disabilities.

    • Physical Restraint and Seclusion: State-mandated notification regarding the laws and local policies governing the use of physical restraint, seclusion, and exclusionary

      time-outs (usually reserved for emergencies).

    • PPRA (Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment): Federal notification regarding parents' rights to inspect instructional materials and opt students out of certain surveys, physical exams, or the collection of personal information for marketing.

       

  3. Health, Wellness, and Nutrition

    • Administration of Medication: State rules (C.G.S. § 10-212a) dictating how medications are handled in school. This must specifically include provisions for the

      self-administration of emergency epinephrine (EpiPens) and asthma inhalers, as well as opioid overdose prevention (Naloxone) policies.

    • Health Assessments & Immunizations: Requirements for mandatory physical exams and vaccines required for school entry and specific grade milestones.

    • Youth Suicide Prevention: The district's policy and procedures for suicide prevention, risk assessment, and crisis intervention.

    • Food Allergies: The district's specific plan for managing life-threatening food allergies and glycogen storage diseases.

    • Free and Reduced-Price Meals: A federal notification for the National School Lunch Program detailing eligibility criteria and application procedures.

       

  4. Operations and Environment

    • Transportation Safety: The specific procedure for parents and students to report complaints regarding school transportation and bus safety (C.G.S. § 10-221c).

    • Child Abuse and Neglect: The policy outlining the statutory duty of school personnel as mandated reporters of suspected child abuse and neglect (C.G.S. § 17a-101).

    • Environmental Notifications: Annual notices regarding the district's Asbestos Management Plan, Pesticide Application policy, and Green Cleaning programs.
