Finally senior year is here which means there are many decisions to make and preparations for your future beyond Plainfield High School. If you’re still unsure of a future career you can complete the career interest inventories again in Naviance. Also, signing up to do a job shadow is a great way to give you a better idea of what you’d like to pursue. Here is another timeline to help keep you on track. Again, please see your counselor if you have specific questions.
-Register to take the SAT. The SAT will be given at Plainfield High School in October. Counselors will be giving you instructions on how to register online. Please be sure when you are signing up for these tests to have your scores sent directly to the schools that you are interested in attending and that you put in the high school code 070090 so your scores are sent to the guidance department. Please note that your SAT scores will not be placed on your transcript so it is important when you register to put in the codes of the schools that you are planning to apply to so the scores get sent directly to them.
-By this point you should be narrowing down your list of college choices to about 5 and adding them to the Colleges I’m Applying to list in Naviance.
It’s a good idea to make a master list of application deadlines and financial aid deadlines for all of the schools that you are interested in. Remember these dates are often not the same!
-Begin asking teachers or others who know you very well to write letters of recommendation. Don’t wait until the last minute and overwhelm your teachers!
-Check to see if any of the schools that you are applying to use the Common Application. If they do, notify your counselor and go to this website for more information www.commonapp.org.
-Prepare Early Decision and Early Admission applications as soon as possible. Most are due between Nov. 1-15.
-Your counselor will be meeting with you individually to review the college application process-it’s a great way to get your questions answered. They will be giving you the Senior Planning Packet which is also available on this website.
-Make sure you look at the essay requirements for the schools you’re interested in. It’s a good idea to start writing the essay now so that you have time to ask teachers, parents and counselors for feedback.
-Attend the College Planning Night offered by the guidance department for students and parents.
-Please let your counselor know when you have applied online so they can send your transcript to the school. Please do not wait until the last minute to request a transcript. We request that you let us know at least two weeks before the application deadline. There are two steps in requesting a transcript. First, let your counselor know that you need a transcript sent and second, log on to Naviance and use these instructions How to Request An Initial Transcript Through Naviance.
-Attend the Financial Aid workshop in December held at QVCC for parents and students. The deadlines to complete the FAFSA will come quickly after January 1st.
-The guidance department strongly recommends that all applications are sent out before the December break.
-Continue to take challenging classes, schools look at the strength of your second semester courses and grades-no time for senioritis!
-You should receive acceptance letters and financial aid offers by mid April. You must notify colleges whether you are accepting or rejecting their offer of admission. Please make sure to inform your counselor of your decision and request a final transcript to go to the school that you have chosen.
