A Message to Our Plainfield Families, Students, and Staff on an Email Threat Scam
Dear Plainfield Families, Students, and Staff,
I am reaching out to share an important update regarding digital safety and our school security. We are aware that many of our neighboring communities have recently received fraudulent emails containing school-related threats.
You may see on the news that several neighboring schools have gone into lockdown in the past few days as a result of these messages. While Plainfield has not received these specific emails, I am sending this to be proactive and ensure our entire school community remains informed and alert.
Understanding the Situation
Connecticut law enforcement has been closely monitoring these developments and has confirmed that these messages are part of a widespread hoax. These emails are designed to cause unnecessary alarm and specifically aim to trick users into clicking on unfamiliar or suspicious links. As technology evolves, these scams can appear quite convincing. However, their primary goal is typically to compromise digital security rather than to pose a physical threat.
Safety as a Priority
Please be assured we are monitoring the situation and that there is no credible threat to our schools. However, we believe that keeping our community informed is the best way to keep our schools safe.
These incidents serve as an important reminder for all of us to practice strong digital habits:
- Avoid Unfamiliar Links: If you receive an email from an unknown sender or one that feels "off," do not click any links or download attachments.
- Protect Personal Information: Never share passwords, login credentials, or personal details through email.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter a suspicious message in your school inbox or on a personal device, please report it immediately to a teacher, a staff member, or our school administration.
We are deeply grateful for the constant vigilance of the Plainfield PD and our School Resource Officers (SROs). Their partnership, along with the cooperation of our students, staff, and families, helps us maintain a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
Warmly,
Mr. Paul M. Brenton
Plainfield Public Schools
