As parents, staying informed and proactive is key to ensuring our children’s safety and success in a digital age. We hope you’ll join us for this vital conversation.  I will be there with Plainfield PD to discuss cyber security and other ways we work to promote safety in our programs.

(September 5th, 2024)

Dear Plainfield Families,
In light of recent events in the national news concerning school safety, we believe this is an opportune time to review our emergency communication procedures with our school community. While we hope never to face such situations, it is crucial that all families are well-informed about our protocols and prepared to receive timely information should the need arise.

You may be aware, from national news, that there was a tragic shooting this week at Apalachee High School in Georgia. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this incident.

In Plainfield, we are constantly reviewing and adapting our security protocols and procedures to protect our students. Prior to the start of each year, we meet with our first responders to review procedures and update protocols. Additionally, in the past year, we have worked to enhance security measures at our schools and have made changes which improve our ability to monitor safety on our campuses. We also continue to work closely with the Plainfield Police Department and local law enforcement agencies to ensure our emergency preparedness plans are thorough and effective.

As a reminder to families, our district has adopted the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), which our staff and students are trained to follow in the event of an emergency. We practice each of the responses through drills throughout the school year.

The SRP is based on the following actions: HOLD, SECURE, LOCKDOWN, EVACUATE, SHELTER. In the event of an emergency, the action and appropriate direction will be announced or signaled at your child's campus. I have attached a parent guide as a PDF which contains information that will allow you to familiarize yourself with the actions we will take and the language we will use.  Plainfield Schools SRP Parent Handout 2024-2025.pdf

How does Plainfield Schools communicate if a school goes into lockdown?
Our first line of communication in the event of an emergency will be through text and alert messages, which are part of our Parent Square notification system. This system also handles our emergency and snow day phone calls.

Parent Square allows you and your family to choose how alerts are received. Directions to set up how you wish to receive alerts can be found here: https://www.parentsquare.com/blog/2020-7-15-help-please-frequently-asked-parent-questions/#deliver_7

Additionally, information will be shared through the official Plainfield Public Schools web page and social media outlets. In the event of an emergency, follow-up emails with more detailed information will be sent as it becomes available.

How can I be sure my contact information is correct?
Parents can sign into their Infinite Campus Portal to make updates to phone numbers, addresses, and student contact information. Directions to do so can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13TDE6Ddf0mN1OIR7rrcQu6OT7iJX_zZHukmiRZcjWSg/pub

We hope that this provides you with clarity on our communication and emergency response protocols. If you are unsure about your action steps as a parent/guardian or would like more information about the SRP, please reach out to your campus principal for clarification.

We appreciate your partnership in ensuring the safety and security of our Plainfield Public Schools community. Please reach out if you have any future questions.

Sincerely,
Paul M. Brenton

Dear Plainfield Families,

What an incredible first day of school we've had! The hallways were buzzing with excitement, classrooms were filled with eager learners, and it was wonderful to see so many smiling faces throughout our buildings. Our teachers and staff have been working hard to prepare for this day, and it was truly heartening to see everything come together so beautifully. We're off to a fantastic start for what promises to be an amazing school year!

As we embark on this new academic journey together, we want to take a moment to discuss an important topic that has been in the media recently, and which impacts our entire school community: the use of cell phones and other electronic devices in our schools

Why This Matters

At the onset, we acknowledge restricting cellular devices is a complex and at times a controversial issue.   I strongly believe that by working together on this issue, we can build upon the positive energy of our first day and create the best possible learning environment for our students throughout the year.

In today's digital age, we recognize the prevalence of technology in our lives. However, we've observed that student cell phone use in classrooms can interfere with teaching and learning. This extends to related devices such as smartwatches and wireless earbuds.

We believe that "cell phones" themselves are not the problem; rather, it's what phones give access to that can be disruptive. The constant connectivity, social media, and instant messaging can divert students' attention from their studies and in-person interactions.

Our goal is to help students focus on their studies, improve their grades, and engage in meaningful face-to-face interactions with their peers and teachers. By managing phone usage, we aim to address these distractions while still acknowledging the potential benefits of technology when used appropriately.

Plainfield Public Schools is committed to the purposeful use of technology. We strive to balance the advantages of digital tools with the need for undistracted learning environments. Please review the practices below with your children to support their learning and wellness. You will note that there are differences by grade level.

Plainfield High School

At PHS, Devices may be used appropriately before the start of the school day, and after the end of the school day. Students may access their cell phones and/or electronic devices during lunch time and during passing time between classes, or in an emergency situation that involves imminent physical danger.

Student devices should be turned off or silenced and stored out of sight while in class, so as not to distract the student and disrupt the learning environment.  Staff will address students who are not compliant with this policy.  If referred to administration, the device will be confiscated and the student’s parent or guardian will need to pick it up.

Plainfield Central School

Plainfield Central Middle School does not allow the use of student cell phones and related electronic devices (smartwatches, wireless earbuds, etc.) during the school day. These devices must be turned off and kept out of sight in lockers during school hours and school activities.

Elementary Schools (Plainfield Memorial, Moosup, and Shepard Hill)

We strongly discourage parents from sending elementary students to school with any personal electronic devices, including cell phones, smart watches, wireless earbuds, etc. It may be best to keep your children's personal devices at home. Their use and display are not permitted during the school day.

Staying Connected

We understand that communication with your child is important. If there's an emergency and you need to reach your child during school hours, please call the school office. We'll ensure that your message is delivered promptly.

Moving Forward

Thank you for your support in reinforcing these guidelines at home. Your partnership is invaluable in creating a positive learning environment for all our students. Together, we can help our students develop healthy habits around technology use while ensuring they receive the best possible education. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's school.

We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to a great school year!

 Warm regards,

Paul M. Brenton

(August 22, 2024)
Dear Plainfield Families,

We are thrilled to welcome students back for the 2024-2026 school year! The excitement is building as we prepare to open our doors and begin another fantastic year of learning and growth.

Important Reminders:

  • Our first day of school for all K-12 students is Thursday, August 29th. Please note that this will be a half day.
  • Our first day of school for our Preschool program at Shepard Hill is Tuesday, September 3rd.

Our entire team has been working tirelessly over the summer to create a warm, welcoming, and enriching environment for your children. From preparing engaging lessons to ensuring our facilities are in top shape, our staff has dedicated countless hours to making this school year a wonderful experience for every student. We are excited to see our hallways and classrooms filled with eager learners once again!

To support our families, all of our school offices will be open next week for parents who have any questions or need assistance with preparing for the school year. Whether you have questions about class schedules, school supplies, or anything else, our staff will be available to help. Additionally, transportation information, including bus routes and schedules, is available on our website for your convenience.

Launch into Learning: 30 Day Countdown

This year, we're placing a special emphasis on student attendance, particularly during the crucial first 30 days of school. Research shows that the initial days of the school year are critical in establishing a strong foundation for learning. Regular attendance during this period is vital for student success, as it sets the tone for the entire academic year. When students attend school consistently from the start, they are more likely to engage in learning, form strong social connections, and develop positive habits that lead to academic achievement.

We’re excited to introduce our new initiative: Launch into Learning: 30 Day Countdown. Our goal is to have every student in school, every day, for the first 30 days. This strong start will not only help students adjust to the new school year but also create a positive momentum that can carry them through the year. During these first weeks, teachers introduce key concepts, establish classroom routines, and begin to build the supportive relationships that are essential for a successful school experience.

We understand that life can be unpredictable, and challenges may arise. However, we ask for your partnership in making daily school attendance a priority, particularly during these first 30 days. Your commitment to your child's education during this crucial period will have a lasting impact on their overall success and well-being.

We can’t wait to see all our students on August 29th as we embark on this exciting new school year together!
